Human Rights Council
Item 4 : Human rights situations that require the Council’s attention
I’am Lahcen Dalil from Western Sahara, a former political prisoner and I call on the attention of the Council’s members on the systematic and serious violation of the fundamental freedoms and rights of the Sahrawi people by the Kingdom of Morocco.
France Libertés denounces the plundering of the natural resources in the occupied territory of Western Sahara with the complicity, notably of the European Union and their member States that do not want to comply with the decisions of the EU Court of Justice and the UN General Assembly resolutions.
We remind all Governments that for any economic activity to be legal in Western Sahara, it needs the consent of the internationally recognized representative of the Territory.
We also call on the attention of the Council’s members on the critical situation of the Sahrawi political prisoners detained in the Moroccan jails (in violation of article 76 of the fourth Geneva Convention) who started an open hunger strike last week to protest against the prison conditions to which they are subjected, the refusal of the Moroccan authorities to grant those who need it access to appropriate medical care and to request their immediate transfer to prisons in the Occupied Territory of Western Sahara.
We urge the Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights defenders and the Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression to thoroughly follow the situation of the Sahrawi Human Rights defenders in the Occupied Territory of Western Sahara and in the Kingdom of Morocco.
I thank you for your attention.
